Basic Plan: Monovision
Monovision is a plan of setting one eye for far distance vision, and the other eye for mid-range vision. The brain will then "blend" the image from the two separate eyes to form one single image. The first eye is set for far distance vision (i.e. watching tv, driving). The second eye is set for mid-range vision, or “shopping” (i.e. reading price-tag).Although both eyes work together, the brain is capable of differentiating and preferring, one eye for distance, and one eye for mid-range.
This strategy has been employed successfully in many contact lens and corneal refractive surgery patients. This plan is used to reduce dependency on glasses but does not work for prolonged work/activities as your eyes are not balanced.
The plan of monovision will cause some loss of stereovision. The bigger the difference between your two eyes, the less binocular depth perception you will have. With monovision, you should be able to perform many daily short-term activities without depending on glasses. With extended reading or prolonged distance vision activity, your eyes will tire out (asthenopia), and therefore you will wear glasses to see better and to improve your ocular balance.
Personalized Plan: “Reduced Dependency on Glasses” Vision with Special Lens Designs
The main benefit of special design lenses is to try to reduce the need for reading glasses. Special design lenses are trying to create a range of vision from near to intermediate and preserve the distance. Each implant uses different optical principles. There is no perfect implant as compromises have to be made to satisfy your lifestyle. The surgical goal and target is to try to balance your eyes for different activities from near to far.
SUMMARY- Which lens is right for you?
MSP covered services are conventional, or basic, and do not include astigmatism or presbyopia correcting implant designs. All services attributable to special design lenses are not covered by MSP and therefore paid by the patient. The rationale is that these services are a refractive benefit. This document is meant to provide a transparent approach and overview to our healthcare system. We strive to have patient’s choose the lifestyle options and service provider they want.
